CMS or the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services uses a 5 star quality rating system to evaluate each nursing home during annual inspection surveys. The rating system allows for an Overall Rating between 1 and 5 stars with 5 being Above Average Quality of Care.
In addition to an overall rating each home receives a rating (again, between 1 and 5 stars) in the following areas Health Inspections, Staffing and Quality Measures. These areas include specifics like average hours of care, acuity and staffing and clinical measures. When homes are deficit in certain areas, policies and procedures, plans of action and remedies are implemented to correct and improve performance.
It is suggested by CMS that no one indicator or rating system be used to evaluate the appropriateness of a particular nursing home for a consumer. The CMS star rating as well as other sources like CareWindow’s objective and real-time ratings and reviews, in addition to direct observation and inquiry when visiting a nursing home, all contribute to educated and informed care decisions.
